Lagard\u00e8re a beaucoup d\u2019admiration pour le duc de Nevers dont il veut percer le secret de la c\u00e9l\u00e8bre botte. Sa provocation et son assurance finissent par convaincre Nevers qui l\u2019engage \u00e0 son service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevers est amoureux de la belle In\u00e8s, mais Caylus, le p\u00e8re de celle-ci, \u00e0 l\u2019intention de la marier au prince de Gonzague, cousin de Nevers. Nevers et In\u00e8s se marient en secret et de leur union nait une petite Aurore. Mais lorsque Gonzague apprend la nouvelle, il fait assassiner le duc.
